Book Review – Fit Mom for Life by Dustin Maher

I can’t believe I’ve been a mom for almost 9 months now!  These have been some of the best months of my life but sometimes I feel totally burnt out.  I’m glad I got a chance to read Fit Moms For Life: How To Have Endless Energy To Outplay Your Kids by Dustin Maher.  I’ve been lucky enough to have lost all of my baby weight and I believe that breastfeeding has played a major role in this accomplishment.   However, I’m afraid I’ll gain some of the weight back once I wean.  Reading this book has given me the motivation to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle as a busy mom.

In the book Maher discusses the 5 pillars of his fitness philosophy.  These include

-Mindset:  Believing you can make a change in your life.  If you see yourself as a healthy and fit momma then you can achieve it!

- Nutrition:  In order to lose weight you have to eat healthy.  This doesn’t mean starving yourself.  Eat 4-5 small nutritious meals a day.

- Strength Training:  Strengh training helps build muscles, burn calories, and tone your whole body.

-Burst Training - This type of training goes from a low intensity workout to burst of high intensity.  There is evidence that this type of workout is much better than the regular cardio workouts.

-Environment: You control what types of food you have in your house and what type of activities your family participates in.

I really think that this book can help moms get in the right direction of looking and feeling their best.  Sometimes we as moms put everybody else’s needs before our own.  However, if we’re fit and have energy not only can we benefit but the whole family can too!  Reading stories of the 31 ladies who have been able to transform their lives has been very inspriational.  I encourage anybody (moms, dads, young or old) to read this book if they want to look and feel great and have the confidence they deserve.

Making Baked Apples For Baby

In a previous blog post I showed you how to make baby food – pears by boiling the pears and then pureeing.  Another way to prepare baby food is by baking.  In this post I’ll show you how to bake apples to make baby applesauce.  If you make pureed apples for your baby I suggest you buy organic because they’re usually contaminated with pesticides.  This is a very basic food that your baby will love!

1.  Start off with about 7-12 apples. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.

2.  Core and cut your apples while leaving the apple peal on.  Fill a baking pan with about 2 inches of water and place your freshly cut apples in the pan.  (If your baby is 8 months or older and has tried diary you can spread some butter over the apples)

3.  Bake for about 30 mins.  You’ll know when your apples are done because you will be able to easily place a fork in your apples.

4.  Allow the apples to cool down.  Peel the skin off the apple slices.  The skin will easily peel off.

5.  Place your apples in a blender/food process/or whatever you use to prepare your baby food and puree to your desired consistency.  Sprinkle a little cinnamon to add some spice to your baby’s food if your baby is 8 months or older.

6.  Freeze your leftovers for your baby to enjoy :D

Baby Fashion – Baby Sunglasses

It’s hard to believe spring is just around the corner.  The weather is starting to get warm and the sun is out a little longer each day.  Protect your baby’s delicate eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays while looking fashionable at the same time with Baby Sun Glasses.  They make a great fashion accessory to any outfit! The sun’s rays can cause damage to your child’s eyes according to the American Academy of Pediatratics.  Look for sunglasses that protect against 99 or 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays.  Also, find a pair of glasses that are bpa free because  if the glasses don’t end up on baby’s face they will probably end up in baby’s mouth.  Look cool and protect your child’s eyes at the same time. So don’t ask yourself “should my baby wear sunglasses?”, ask “what kind of sunglasses should my baby wear?”.

Not only do my sunglasses protect my eyes, they also protect me from the mamarazzi

Throw Back Thursday with a Twist

I decided that I wanted to jump on the “Throwback Thursday” bandwagon and I found the perfect  picture to use as my first image!

When Baby V was baptized I really wanted her to wear the outfit I wore to my baptism.  Unfortunately, we couldn’t find it in time.  A few months later my mother was cleaning the basement and found the baptism garment in a box.  It wasn’t the pristine gown it once was.  The white had turned into a shade of yellow and the pink accents weren’t as vivid.  My baptism outfit had become a vintage gown and I never felt so old!  Anyway, we had Baby V try it on and we took a picture of her holding a picture of me in the exact same outfit.  So what do you think?  Do we look alike?  All babies look the same?

Make Baby Food – Pears

As I’ve probably said in earlier posts…I don’t really cook or clean.  Baby V has started eating solids so I figure the best time to start cooking is now.  Pears are an easy first food to make.  Pears are great for babies because they’re high in fiber.   I introduced pears to Baby V at around 5 months and they were a big hit!  It’s recommend that you steam the pears first before feeding them to baby if (s)he is under 6 months.  For all you moms who are “cooking challenged” here’s a step by step (with pictures) guide on how to make baby food – Pears.

1.  Start off with a few pears.

2.  Peel and core your pears and then chop them into small pieces.

3.  Put the pears in a pot with a lid.  Add a little bit of water to your pears (some of the juicer varieties won’t need to have any water added to them).  Cook the pears over low heat.  It should probably take about 5-10 mins for the pears to cook.  You’ll know when the pears are done when you are able to easily place a fork in them.

4.  Allow the pears to cool down and then place into your blender/food processor etc.  You might want to add some of the water you cooked the pears in to add nutrients.  Adding water also allows you to have a thinner consistency of your puree.  Puree your food to your desired consistency. You’ve officially and successfully made your own baby food :)

5.  If you want to save some of your pear puree for later you can freeze your puree and reheat it at a later time.  I like to freeze my purees in ice cube trays. One cube is equal to one oz.  It’s helpful to know exactly how much your baby is eating during their feedings.  Frozen pears are good for about 6 months.  Always test the temperature of your food before giving them to your baby.

Top 10 Tuesdays – Craziest Celebrity Baby Names

A congratulations are in order for Beyonce and Jay-Z.  They are proud new parents to their daughter, Blue Ivy.  Blue Ivy is a unique name that has a lot of meaning to hip hop’s power couple.  I personally think it’s a cute name, although, some celebrity’s babies have crazy names!  The following is a list of the top 10 craziest celebrity baby in my opinion (in no particular order).

10.  Audio Science (Parent:  Shannyn Sossamon) – Sounds like a class I took in middle school during the ’90s.

9.  Pilot Inspektor (Parent: Jason Lee) – I guess inspector gadget was taken.

8.  Speck Wildhorse (John Cougar Mellencamp and Elaine Irwin) -  When I hear this name I think of specifications for a wild horse

7.  Mars Merkaba (Erykah Badu and Jay Electronica) – This name sounds like the planet they replaced Pluto for.

6.  Diva Thin Muffin (Parent: Frank Zappa) – Having “Diva” and “Thin” in your name is a recipe for disaster…or maybe it’s a recipe for a new muffin.

5. Tu Morrow (Rob Morrow) – The good thing about naming your son Tu Morrow is that he’ll only be a day away.

4. Moxie Crimefighter  (Parent: Penn Gillete) – Sounds like a bad ass character in a Peter Rabbit book.

3.  Petal Rainbow Blossom (Parent: James Oliver) – How could you yell at a kid with a name like this?

2.  Fifi Trixiebell (Parents: Bob Geldofand Paula Yates) – I hear this name and I think somebody is calling their pet Chihuahua

1.  Pirate (Parents: Jonathan Davis and porn-star wife Deven) – His first word was probably Arrrr.
